COMFORTABLE YOGA CLOTHING DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU LIVE
The only real rule for what yoga clothing is appropriate to wear is, make sure it's comfortable. But what's comfortable varies widely depending on where you live.
For Yoga Day 2006, one group of yoga enthusiasts could be seen sporting some rather unusual yoga clothing. These particular devotees were clad in yoga clothing that included heavy down parkas, gloves, hats, and some awkward looking footwear. "Why so much clothing for yoga" you ask? Well, Maria Messina and her group, who live in Palmer, Alaska, have a good answer. On Yoga Day it was minus 41 degrees Fahrenheit, and everyone opted to adopt their yoga poses outdoors!
The Alaska contingent all reported having fun, but one must assume that they were relieve once they were able to remove all that yoga clothing and enjoy the steaming hot pot of chili that awaited them inside.
While people in Alaska must wear heavy layers of yoga clothing if they plan to practice exposed to the elements, people in southern climes must be just as careful not to wear too much clothing even while "just" doing yoga. Yoga is a form of exercise, and during exercise heat stress develops both from heat gained from the environment and with the heat produced internally by the exercise itself.
Here are some guidelines, including what yoga clothing is appropriate, when practicing in hot weather:
- If practicing outdoors wear loose fitting, light colored absorbent or porous yoga clothing. This will promote freer air circulation.
- If you are outside, wear a well-ventilated broad brimmed hatand sunscreen.
- If practicing inside, wear as little yoga clothing as possible.
- Use fans to circulate the air.
- Keep windows and doors open to reduce humidity and promote air circulation and ventilation.
- Whenever possible, practice in the evening hours or early morning.
- Drink plenty of cool fluids. Water works fine.
- Stop and get out of the heat if you notice any feelings of dizziness, nausea, or if you feel faint.
- Other signs of heat stress include feeling unreasonably irritable or panicky, or if you notice a pounding, rapid heartbeat.
- Make sure if you are practicing in a group that you check those around you often for signs and symptoms of heat stress.
