YOGA VIDEOS: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
With the exponential increase in yoga's popularity there has come an explosive demand for quality yoga video instruction. And sophisticated shoppers look for a number of components when gauging the quality and usefulness of these tools.
People want a yoga video where the degree of posture difficulty matches the skill level of the intended audience. Of course, any video should be clear about exactly what is its target audience, and if it includes progressive positions that range from beginner to skilled.
Consumers want the instructor and models in the video to be poised and at ease while expertly demonstrating positions. Also, it can be frustrating when instructors move too fast from position to position. Yoga is not a race. A quality yoga video should feature clear information presented in a logical order.
As with any exercise video, yoga videos are shot on locations and with backgrounds that range from far eastern tropical beach paradises to what looks like someone's garage. Opinions differ, however, I find elaborate settings are often signs of cheesy presentations and even instructors. It also makes me wonder why they're trying so hard; are they trying to hide something?
Exotic locales are just fancy packaging; you know you're the one paying for it somehow. The same might be said about celebrity instructors. A big name host does not always translate into quality yoga video.
Some direct online quotes from shoppers who purchased Denise Austins "Yoga Essentials," for example, speak eloquently to this point. One amateur reviewer wrote, "This is not yoga. It's callistenics (sic)." Another apparently unsatisfied customer weighed in with, "[Austin] doesn't seem to understand that yoga involves the mind as well as the body." That reviewer went on to say that Austin was in her opinion, "completely obnoxious." Ouch! Now that's what I call a tough position!
